Interview with Javier Muñoz Posse, CEO and founder of Furtivo
Within the framework of Piscina Barcelona, Javier Muñoz Posse, head of the Furtivo studio, proposes a revamped vision of wellness in the hotel sector, beyond offering spas and pools. His approach involves creating integral experiences in which all the spaces (rooms, communal areas and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities) generate comfort and an emotional connection, incorporating sustainability in a cross-cutting manner. Posse explains how Furtivo uses interior design to redefine the standards of wellness, advocating a holistic design that merges aesthetics, wellness and respect for the environment as an essential part of the hotel experience.
– How do you approach wellness spaces from the standpoint of interior design?
At Furtivo we regard wellness as a multi-sensory experience that begins with the guests’ initial impression. We therefore design spaces that invite them to relax and connect with themselves and the surroundings. We work with silence, natural light, noble materials and a layout that facilitates both intimacy and a harmonious flow. It’s no longer a matter of just spas and gyms; the whole hotel should be a wellness space.
– What do you take into account when it comes to considering partnerships with potential suppliers?
A painstaking supplier selection process is key to achieving aesthetic coherence and operational excellence. We place particular value on traceability, a commitment to sustainability, innovative materials and the ability to adapt to the project’s identity. We work closely with our partners to ensure that the final product reflects the spirit of the place.
– What differences between the approaches to new projects and refurbishments would you highlight?
In projects that start from scratch we have the chance to define the spatial narrative from the outset, which gives us lots of freedom. On the other hand, during refurbishments the challenge and beauty lie in respecting the context, listening to what the building tells us and enhancing its identity. The focus is the same in each case: building a memorable brand experience.
– How do you approach the concept of wellness in your projects?
We integrate it from the conceptual phase onwards. Wellness isn’t a service for us, it’s an atmosphere. We use natural materials, warm lighting, honest textures and layouts that respect the guests’ pace of life. Besides, we always strive to secure a seamless connection between the interior and nature, even in urban environments.
– How do you reflect this extended idea of wellness in your projects?
We pay attention to every tiny detail that affects physical and emotional comfort, including the acoustics, ergonomics, smell and temperature. We create living spaces, not just beautiful ones. The aim is for the design to be felt, not seen, so that the guests don’t want to leave, even if they don’t know exactly why.
– Do you notice the hybridisation of the water areas with the rest of the hotel?
Absolutely. More and more customers are seeking a seamless integration between the wellness spaces and other areas of the hotel, such as the gardens and rooftops; there’s no longer an isolated area to relax in, but rather a holistic experience with wellness constantly present everywhere.
– How do you regard the hybridisation of the indoor and outdoor areas?
It’s a trend that we can already observe. The boundaries are blurred in many of our projects; we work with pergolas, smooth transitions and materials that work in the two worlds. The goal is to create continuity, not a contrast. This also influences the landscaping, which becomes an extension of the interior design.
– What roles do the multi-disciplinary teams play?
They’re fundamental for us. At Furtivo we integrate interior design, but we always work in dialogue with architects, engineers, landscapers and operators. The key is to build a common vision from the outset. This is the only way of guaranteeing a coherent and emotionally powerful execution.
– Can you provide us with a brief outline of a project that summarises the above?
One of our most representative projects is a hotel in Majorca, in the middle of the island. It involves the comprehensive refurbishment of a historical building, in which we work on the brand storytelling, the interior design and the selection of unique elements. The wellness experience can be enjoyed everywhere, with open spaces, Mediterranean light, integration with the landscape and an outdoor spa that connects with the exterior.
– Is this the first time you’ve attended Piscina Barcelona? What do you hope to find?
This is our first visit. We hope to meet professionals who share our vision of wellness as a way of life. We’d like to discover technical solutions that further enhance the emotional dimension of design, connecting with operators and brands that want to go one step further in how they understand luxury and wellness.
